A Stunning Come From Behind Win for 10-Man NYPF Beats Doxa Again

The New York Pancyprian Freedoms showed the heart of true champions as they came from behind with a man down to triumph 3-2 over Doxa SC on March 29th this time in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Premier Soccer League. The game at Joseph Fosina Field was the site of the March 12th NYPF penalty kick win over Doxa SC in the Manning Cup and where Doxa would try everything possible to beat the NYPF.

After an opening goal by NYPF forward James Tristino, the intensity of the game got the better of midfielder Luis Argudo who was shown a straight red card in the 25th minute. Doxa would then tie and and go ahead in the game with two unanswered goals. NYPF Head Coach Panos Onisforou responded and the game changed. Rafael Bustamenti was pushed up top and went through on goal to level the game. The NYPF had to wait until the 89th minute for the indefatigable Joseph Holland to head home the winning goal after a powerful shot by Michalis Clark was saved.

“You cannot take the heart out of the Champions,” said Martinos Kyprianou, NYPF Director. “This game was another example of what a win against us means for all these other teams. There were supporters of three teams all rooting against us at the game which made our win even greater.”

“In this league every game counts,” said Onisiforou. “We have the best squad of players and we march forward one game at a time.”

The win keeps the NYPF (11-0-2) in third place with two games in hand while Doxa SC (6-1-7) languishes in sixth place. The NYPF get a little break with their next game vs fourth place Zum Schneider FC (9-1-3) at Belson Stadium on Wednesday, April 12th.
